Why It Is Important To Help Support This Film

The Cat Rescuers is a documentary about four dedicated cat-loving activists in Brooklyn, New York who are saving lives and raising awareness of a global animal welfare issue.

Award winning filmmakers Rob Fruchtman and Steve Lawrence spent four years following these cat activists, documenting not only all the good they are doing, but how it affects their lives. Against great odds - and sometimes at great sacrifice to their personal lives and bank accounts - they are making a difference. By observing the challenges the rescuers face, the film helps viewers understand what drives them to be out on the streets day and night as animal rights activists.

In March I had the opportunity to meet Rob and Steve at Cat Camp NYC. Not only are they both warm, kind and uber talented, they are truly passionate about cat welfare and the selfless activists who are out there on the front lines day in and day out.

For two days at Cat Camp, I worked at the Cat-Hi booth, right next to The Cat Rescuers Film booth. I watched cat lover after cat lover go through a series of emotions as they viewed the trailer to the documentary. I watched Rob and Steve engage with each person. It was obvious to me that filming this documentary was a true labor of love.

More About The Cat Rescuers

Experts estimate there are upwards of one million abandoned and feral cats on the streets of New York City. With animal shelters overcrowded and resources stretched thin, hundreds of cat-loving activists have taken to the streets to implement TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return), a technique that, along with adoptions, can humanely control and reduce the population. The Cat Rescuers provides an inside look on how these programs work.

The four volunteer cat rescuers featured in the film are:

  • Sassee - an indomitable, laugh-out-loud funny and street-wise former rapper turned legal investigator, who lives in Canarsie and will hop in her car any time of day or night to rescue a cat.

  • Claire Corey - an award-winning artist who also works full-time in the Advertising and Graphic Design Department at a major art museum when she isn't rescuing kitties.

  • Stuart Siet - a sweet-natured electronics engineer whose career has taken him from supervising wireless sound systems for Broadway shows to his current full-time gig maintaining radio communications for NYC’s Fire Department. He still finds time for cat rescue on the side.

  • Tara Greene - a big-hearted, indefatigable elder health care administrator who lives in Gerritsen Beach, who seems to be everywhere at once in Brooklyn, doing the toughest rescues and making sure every last cat she saves gets adopted.

There Is No Better Time Than Right Meow

Rob and Steve hope the film will inspire viewers to get involved with animal rescue in any way they can. One of the most important goals is to make the film available to rescue organizations to show in their own cities and towns for fundraising purposes and to trigger discussion with local policy-makers.
